UPDATED! See Below...
So I was perusing the Auto Parts section of the NH Craigslist last night for random and sundry parts for the XC-sans-XC last night and came across a '98 S70 being parted in the next town over. I emailed the guy asking about three parts I needed:
Hey,
Any chance the passenger side front door latch still has a working power lock actuator? What color interior does the car have? Looking for a charcoal colored knee bolster. Also looking for a keyless entry remote for an alarm equipped 70-series car - does this car have the alarm system? I'm in Manchester, and happy to help pull the parts.
Thanks,
Carl
This morning, I wake up to an answer:
Hello carl.. the only thing I have is the door lock actuator... the car didn't have a keyless entry.. and the interior is tan
Ok, one out of three isn't the worst thing ever. Besides, my wife has been bugging me to fix the actuator on the passenger side anyway. I respond:
Door lock actuator is the more pressing concern of the three anyway. As long as the lock and unlock function worked from the switch while the car was among the living, I'm interested. How much would you be looking for it?
He says (sic):
Yes they worked in have the dores off of the car right now so I would have to take it apart unless u want the whole door..
I was all like:
I'm game for taking it apart.
Then we started talking numbers:
What do u think its a fair price
So I threw him a number, succinctly:
Given the disassembly required, $20.
This was his response:
To be honest u can probably get one at the junkyard already out for that price
Seriously, what the hell is up with people. I am offering you a crisp $20 bill for a part that I would have to remove myself. Junkyards don't pull these from the cars; they are left to rot in the yard and do not have confirmed operational status. Did I lowball him?!
UPDATE! Well, after a couple of Oppos chimed in and I had a cup of coffee, turns out that I may have lowballed myself. So I sent this along:
Surprisingly, the junkyards don't remove these units from the doors on a regular basis. Like I said, I'm happy to remove the unit from the door.
He responded in kind, and I will be heading to his shop next week to get my $20 lock actuator/latch assembly. Result. Now to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! to learn how to R+R this Bad Larry to the sounds of his pleasing baritone.

Looks like he thinks you're offering too much, or something... Just tell him you're fine with the extra work of removing it.

No. He should be selling at junkyard prices. Whole door or not.

By the way, if you want a remote, I have a spare one, part number 9166200, which I think should work with your XC. I picked it up at the junkyard for my 850R, only to find that the keyless systems were different between the 850 and the 70 series. I have no idea whether it works, but aside from a bit of chipped plastic around the edge, it looks to be in good shape. I think that you'll still have to find somebody with VIDA to program it in, but it's no use to me, so it's yours if you want it.
